Description
Dominated by an enormous fiberglass sculpture of a black and white cat, Catford is a well-connected south London neighbourhood with Victorian and Edwardian streets combined with post-WW2 development, e.g. the cat and the shopping centre. Shopping is also available on the Broadway and market and Lewisham's civic centre and a modern library are here.
History
Catford grew from a ford of the river Ravensbourne and remained primarily rural until the railway arrived in 1857. It is first mentioned in the 13th century when a part of the manor was sold. The oldest pub is believed to date from 1701. This is the Black Horse and Harrow which is now in a 19th-century building. There were houses near Catford Bridge in 1745 and major development came with the Corbett estate from 1885 to 1911.
