Area Guide - Buying Properties in Crystal Palace

Description

In 2016 Crystal Palace was designated one of the best places to live in London.  Victorian architecture is combined with a large park, trendy independent shops and bars and rail links to central London. As one of the highest points in London, there are magnificent views and the TV transmitter mast can be seen from a distance making a landmark of London's own version of the Eiffel Tower.  The Triangle area is the hub of the community and night life and is also home to a food market. The Crystal Palace football club is in nearby Selhurst.

History

The area was known as Sydenham Hill until the Crystal Palace structure was moved from Hyde Park after the Great Exhibition there in 1854.  Until that time it was mostly oak forest but in Victorian times grand villas and houses were built as a result of the railway arriving to take visitors to see the exhibition.  The Crystal Palace burnt down in 1936 and the park became home to the National Sports Centre.
